The Little Man Turns Six Months Old

Last Wednesday, Xion celebrated his six month birthday. We actually had a whole thing planned to celebrate. He was going to try a new big boy food, get a gift from Uncle Dave, and watch mommy and daddy eat the cupcakes he can’t eat just yet. We planned to sing him happy birthday and make a big fuss over our little guy. A fuss was made alright, but it was actually from him and not for him like we intended. Oh, the constant reminder that he’s in charge and we are merely along for the ride. 😀

Xion isn’t usually a fussy baby at all, so when we went to pick him up from Nana Flint’s and she said it was the “day from hell” we knew our little guy must not be feeling so hot. By the time we got him home he was hot, tired, and we are pretty sure that he’s teething, too. Fussy was definitely not only allowed but completely expected! After a quick dinner, he was out like a light by 7 p.m. Happy Birthday little man.

So, it was a day late, but he absolutely loved his gift from Uncle Dave.

For me?!

It talks to me and plays songs!

India watched from the sidelines. She prefers it this way as Xion has learned how to “pet” her. His version includes grabbing her fur and tugging. He thinks it’s hilarious but she doesn’t think as much. She’s a good sport.

I can keep an eye on that kid from here!

The fun was taken inside as the little guy needed a bath (and we needed a beer).

Elmo, check this out! It's singing!

He had his 6 month shots on Monday. Russ says that X is like a little tea kettle when he gets pricked. His face is a little surprised, he closes his eyes, his face turns red and then…WAH!!! It only takes about a minute for him to calm down with mommy and daddy giving him lots of hugs and kisses. He’s in the 50th percentile for his weight (16 lbs. and 14 ozs. now!) and is in the 75th percentile for his length (27 inches!). He’s turning into quite the eating machine and would be a total fruititarian if we didn’t tell him he had to eat his veggies, too. Bananas are his favorite and green beans are only eaten when we “trick” him by mixing them with sweet potatoes. There’s no guessing when he doesn’t like something!

What else is new? Oh, a new view!

Look mommy, I can pull daddy's right hair out!

Lastly, we are trying this new hair brained scheme to save money. Apparently people have been doing it for years and it’s called “cooking.” In all seriousness, it’s not that we mind cooking, it’s the time actually. In the end, though, our wallets are telling us that we’d rather eat healthier food at home than waste our money on the convenience of picking something up. We’ve been having a good time finding yummy fruits and vegetables at local weekend markets to make new dishes. Woz made some chocolate chip zucchini muffins (from the Happy Herbivore cookbook) this weekend with a big zucchini straight out of Nana Flint’s garden. The end result was pretty yummy!

Now if they could only make themselves. 😉

Getting Out of the House

We still aren’t used to the crazy heat of summer and typically stay inside where it’s nice and cool, but sometimes we dare to leave the comfort of our air conditioning. 😉

We have been talking about upgrading Woz’s VW Beetle to a bigger family car. Russ read a lot of safety reviews and found out which have the best “green” ratings. So we all packed up and headed out for an afternoon of test drives. The idea was to stop at about three different lots but because it was SO HOT (we were sweating buckets waiting to test drive an Equinox), we actually only made it to one place. We could have probably rallied to at least one more but Xion said he’d had enough and wanted to get out of his car seat because he was hot and hungry. So we made a pit stop at the closest Starbucks we could find.

His first visit to the ‘Bucks.

I'd like a latte, please! No? Okay, I'll settle for this bottle -- again!

Don't let the serious look fool you. Starbucks makes Russ giddy!

Woz being a good sport on the other side of the camera.

Needless to say, we didn’t buy a car that day. (We did really like the Equinox, though!) We’ve decided we need to test drive a lot more cars (and drink a lot more Starbucks) before we make a commitment.

Speaking of cars, Xion loves cruising around the house in his wheels.

I'm coming through! Beep beep!

The evenings are the best time to try to get outside so we are taking advantage of the cooler air when we can.

I have Osito! Let's roll!

Daddy leads the way.

Not only is it cooler but the skies are amazing at that time of the day.

Stunning.

Someone is impressed!

It looks like magic, Mommy!

What do you think. Osito?

Someone was stealing kisses!

Are everyone's parents as mushy as mine? Sheesh!

Let’s hope for another gorgeous night tonight!

Foodies

So if there is one thing us Flints love, it’s our food. We even have “snack plans” in place for when we unwind at night and put X to bed. It cracks us up that later in life we’ll tell him how, as soon as he was asleep, mommy and daddy were making ice cream sundaes and having dance parties in the living room. 😛

Our little Mr. Pickles seems to be taking after us in the food department and is already in love with the new flavors he is experiencing. He took on that rice cereal like a champ and is now on to big boy foods like peas and carrots! Tonight he’s going to try bananas or apples for the first time; we’ll see what he’s in the mood for when dinner rolls around. 😉

With every new item he’s just not sure what to think at first.

So these are peas?

Pretty good stuff! More, please.

Russ read that you need to wait a few days in between each new food to make sure there aren’t any allergic reactions. Once we put peas on the A-Ok list, it was time for something new.

Peas AND carrots. I love this!

Hurry, Daddy, I want MORE!

We are still new to this baby food in a jar business. This is what happens when mommy isn’t expecting a Xion hand to crazily fly through the air and give hers a smack.

Xion called this "Carrot Surprise"

Xion is too young to even see this as an “uh oh” and seemed quite pleased with this accident. We think he might have even being planning this little display as he is perhaps a budding little Jackson Pollock.

As for us, well, we are still trying to get back in the habit of eating better as we got in some very bad habits when Woz was baking Xion. We still reminisce about when she was in her 7th and 8th month of pregnancy; we’d have first and second lunch and dinner followed by an extensive evening snack plan. Oh, the good ol’ days. 😛 Needless to say, we both have pounds we’d like to shed and are back on some healthier food choices. (And saying no to chocolate chip cookies at 3 a.m.)

Every morning Russ makes us smoothies before heading to work. This green creation included kiwi, spinach, pineapple, broccoli, banana, juice, yogurt, almond milk, and soy protein.

Yummy goodness awaits

Ta da! Russ calls this one the Incredible Hulk

This was last night’s dinner. Sweet and sour chik’n with broccoli over basmati rice. Lots of protein for post workout. (That’s Russ working out…Woz thinks she’s allergic to it.)

More yummy goodness

After everyone had a fully tummy last night we headed out for a nighttime walk. (Woz’s version of exercise). Xion started snoozing all comfy in his stroller under the open sky and when we came home, he got tucked in nice and tight…and mom and dad had ice cream sandwiches. 😉
