Crushin’ It – An Update

Seems like the storm clouds are finally starting to clear and the sun is coming out to shine. This feels really good and the Flints are a happy bunch.

It’s hard to figure out just where to start on this update since I’ve not been very good about blogging over the past, well, two years or so. That’s okay! I’ll just dive right in. ๐Ÿ™‚

Mr. Pickles is growing like a weed and has been keeping really busy this summer. He went to a school/summer camp for two weeks and got to socialize with kids his own age and get familiar with where he’ll be in the fall. He also took swimming lessons and loves being a little fishie minus putting his head under water (mommy feels the same way, Mr. P!).

He’s also pretty much as spoiled as they come. Check out the super cool fort that Nana and Papa Flint built for him out of repurposed materials they had around the house (we love how they don’t waste anything!):

11223541_10206490136443774_8484750319221717325_n

Doesn’t he look so big here?!

And here he is after getting a new magazine subscription from Grandpa Gato and Grandma Maria:

All smiles!

All smiles!

He’s also been encouraging mommy to continue her yoga practice and will ask to do poses on the mat. Here he is practicing:

Future yogi.

Future yogi.

His latest obsessions are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, stickers (and sticking them EVERYWHERE), and says his signature color is red. He also likes to help mommy get dressed in the morning while coordinating outfits. “Mom, I think you need to take your black purse today.” ๐Ÿ™‚

Speaking of mommy…I’ve started a new job at a local college here in Albuquerque as an Admissions Representative. I work with students who are interested in becoming nurses and discuss the program with them. It’s so fun to discuss goals with future students and work out a plan to get them to where they want to be. It’s only been a week and a half so far, but I think I’m really going to love it!

Russ has been plugging away as an IT administrator of a call center where he manages about 1000 users on a daily basis. Talk about keeping someone on his toes! He loves what he does, though, and he gets all the free Starbucks he can drink so it’s a pretty good gig for him. He loves the people he interacts with and enjoys the work so it makes the days go by quickly. Sometimes, too quickly and he has to bring the work home at night and on weekends, too. Again, good thing he loves what he does!

As always, Russ & I are always in love with good TV and are currently obsessed with Key & Peele, Ray Donovan, and Power.

Some of the best TV, though, is just watching the antics of Mr. Pickles! We will leave you with a mashup of him singing the childhood classic “No More Monkeys Jumping On the Bed” and Brad Paisley’s hit “Crushin’ It.” Until next time…

Fancy (A Flint Update)

Wow, who knew we still had a blog? I guess we decided to hibernate for the winter but it’s time to peek out (man it’s sunny out there!) and give a little update.

Let’s just cut to the chase and talk about the most important Flint. The one you all come here to hear about…Mr. Pickles. We know he’s the main attraction and, honestly, we totally understand why. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Over the past several months he’s shot up like a string bean and can reach wayyyyy too many things in the house now. Nothing, I repeat nothing, is safe. The cats are all happy they can climb high atop their cat tree, but the dogs, well, they aren’t so lucky. Mr. P has recently professed his love for sweet Willa and she’s not too sure what to make of her new shadow.

He’s a talking machine now, too, and is entering the “Why?” and “How’d that happen?” phase of his little life. We do our best to explain things to the little man but sometimes it’s easiest to just say “Because that’s how Batmanย does it” and call it a day.

Batman Slippers

Another crazy milestone is that X-man is totally potty trained (cue the music and confetti) and he pretty much trained himself. Russ and I know he could have been trained earlier but we made the conscious choice to let him go at his own pace. With the help of No More Diapers for Ducky, talking to him about the big boy potty, and Nina Needs to Go, one day Xion proclaimed he was ready to use the bathroom all on his own and hasn’t stopped since. It was pretty much the easiest process ever and he only had 2 little accidents after that. He’s completely into his Jake and McQueen chones now and we are ridiculously proud parents.

And how about me and Russ? Well, we can’t compete with Mr. Pickles in milestones, but we have been busy, too. I’ve resumed my writing business and taken on new clients and have even started a YA novel about a young girl named Xavia. I took a trip to New Orleans and listened to some great music, drank way too much Purple Haze, and got lost until 1 a.m.ย and stumbled upon Cafe Du Monde.

As for Russ, well, when I asked him what he wanted to let you all know, he said to let you know he’s alive. Good to know, babe, good to know. ๐Ÿ˜‰ He is happy cruising around our new car, though, a Ford Explorer who he has fondly dubbed the Death Bringer. Sure makes this mama feels safe that he carts around our 3-year-old in a vehicle with that moniker.

In other news, we’ve fallen in love with Bill Maher, Silicon Valley, and Iggy Azalea. It’s like we are 40 and 14 all at once. Oh, and we are moving across town with the help of Nana and Papa Flint in the next month or so. Goodbye to that lengthy commute to Trader Joe’s to get goodies and get to the nicerย movie theater. Priorities, people, priorities.

So, that’s about it for this lazy Sunday. We’ll leave you with Mr. Pickles latest favorite song. You know, because he’s so fancy…

A Very Long December

We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you this latest update.

BreakingNews

So here’s the thing — December is sort of a hard month for me in general (I’m totally going to stop narrating this blog referring to Woz and Russ as if we all didn’t know I’m writing it, okay? Okay. *smile*). Anniversaries of bad news, suicides, lost loved ones. It’s sort of one of those months that I always want to just sleep through. Yet, it always seems to pop up after November anyway. Persistant little thing, that December.

December seems to be the month where I feel like I have so much to say and so very little to say all at the same time. I’ve just learned to roll with it, to be honest.

A few days ago, I walked into our home office and I saw Russ looking at this blog. He was clicking through old posts — looking at pictures, smiling at the different phases of our little Mr. Pickles (is he seriously going to be 2 in just a couple of months?!). And I realized that I don’t come here much anymore. I think about it. I even try to snap a photo or two specifically to post here…but then I just don’t make it back.

It didn’t really take me long to realize why.

This year has sort of been what I would call a very long December.

Don’t get me wrong. This year has created some amazing memories and, overall, the Familia Flint is a very happy one.

I’ve used this space to share our happiest times — lots of smiles, lots of laughter. But this year has had a little bit more than our fair share of sadness and tears.

If you happen to read my other blog, you know by now that I’ve been struggling with managing depression for the majority of this year. In fact, I’ve actually been on a leave of absence from work since January. That’s not the sort of thing that feels like a warm and fuzzy family blog post, ya know?

Dear ol’ depression has affected Russ and me in huge ways, tested our marriage to it’s very core (we keep coming out on top, thankyouverymuch), and we keep on moving forward — together. It’s a continuous work in progress.

Then came the big computer corporation company “work force reduction” of 2012. Work force reduction is the nice way of saying “thanks for playing the game, folks, but goodbye.” And just like that, on a Tuesday in June, Russ came home to let me know that he no longer had a job. Again, not the thing I’d come rushing to the keyboard to press publish on in lightning speed.

Turns out that it’s not as easy as taking a pill to remedy the fact that my brain and emotions go awry to the point that I can’t easily function at a good ol’ 9 to 5. Turns out it’s not as easy as updating your LinkedIn profile and sending out application after application every single day to get a new job. Turns out it’s not always lots of smiles and laughter.

But through it all, we continue to push forward.

Every night when Russ and I go to bed we tell each other our favorite part of the day. It’s not always easy to think of a favorite part — especially when it’s been a particularly difficult day. Yet, we always manage to find at least one good thing. And just this week (as money is beginning to get tighter and tighter) we’ve started to tell each other one thing we were grateful for or appreciated in the day. This helps put things in perspective and many times can provide that smile that may have been M.I.A. just a few minutes earlier.

Yesterday we were grateful for a sunny afternoon in Old Town…

IMG_5125

grateful.

IMG_5123

c’mon. how can we NOT smile when we have this guy?

So yes, it’s been one “very long December” and literally the darkest day of the year is almost upon us. But soon after, the days will become brighter…and I have to believe our days will, too.

Memories of May

Here’s a May update from the family Flint. Mostly in pictures. ๐Ÿ˜€

We are putting Mr. Pickles to work. If you need contract work, go ahead and give him a call.

All I need is a hard hat and I’m ready to roll!

Already taking breaks. I think it’s going to take awhile to get the job done. He’s lucky he’s so cute.

Happy.

Russ has been heading to the basketball court as much as he can. While Xion usually hangs out on the swings with Mommy, he decided to shoot some hoops with Daddy instead.

The Celtics will be calling him anytime now.

Woz has been taking daily walks and snapped this because she just couldn’t resist.

Magical moonlight.

Just hanging out.

More happy.

Xion loves to grocery shop. Well, anywhere that has carts is his new favorite place to be.

Cart pushing Pickle.

Woz, once again, had a gorgeous Mother’s Day.

Xion is already working on his autograph.

Gosh, he’s grown a bit in the last year, hasn’t he?

So happy to be a mommy.

Mr. Pickles got Woz beautiful one-of-a-kind gifties. (With Daddy’s help, of course!)

Amethyst is Xion’s birthstone. ๐Ÿ˜€

Pretty art for above her writing desk.

Getting some sunshine.

He’s the sunshine.

He’s so proud of himself for learning to climb things.

So pleased with himself.

Xion loves to pick flowers for Mommy and Daddy.

Little flowers from the little man.

“Hiding” things in his bed is something he thinks is just hilarious.

The shirt says “I don’t go looking for TROUBLE, it finds me.” Ain’t that the truth. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Do these beads go with this outfit? I’m going to just go with it.

If only bath time was still this entertaining.

It’s the little things…

First dip in the pool this season.

Splish splash!

Mommy stayed on dry land.

Don’t drop me, Mommy!

Sporting Daddy’s old duds.

Vintage is so in style, Daddy!

We’ll never get control of the TV again.

Time for Baby Einstein!

No wonder we are exhausted all the time. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Out to Dinner, Making Music, and Bath Time

It really doesn’t take a whole lot to keep the little man entertained (thank goodness!). While Mommy was cleaning the kitchen the other day, Xion had fun discovering the age old pots, pans, and wooden spoon band. He was making his own music in no time!

Need a drummer for your band, Grandpa? I'm in!

Are you recording, Mommy? I'm gonna need a demo!

Taking Xion out to dinner isn’t quite as simple as it used to be. We used to be able to pack some diapers, a bottle, and a blanket and we were good to go. Most of the time, he never even woke up from the deep sleep he was in when we left the house. Fast forward to 7 month old Mr. Pickles and it’s a little more complicated. We leave the house with a bursting at the seams diaper bag fulls of food, toys, diapers, things to chew, books, and a high chair cover. Sleep? What’s that?

I hope the main course is tastier than this!

Tomato?! Omigosh! I love tomatoes!

Ooooohhh, so tasty!

Our guy is already a pretty social one. He befriended another Flying Star patron that night named Virginia. She was a curious little gal who wore a big hat and loved coming over ย to “pet” Xion’s soft skin. They seemed to have quite a conversation going, but she wouldn’t talk to us at all. ๐Ÿ˜›

I totally love your hat. Did you get it at that new baby couture place? Fancy.

Caked with tomato juice and teething biscuit bits, it’s bath time!

I'm singing in the tub. Singing in the tuuuuuub!

After that, it was into cozy jammies and off to bed. ๐Ÿ˜€

In non-baby related news (we know, what’s that?!), we got a new car. Woz’s little VW Beetle, Gretchen, just wasn’t the most family friendly vehicle (two doors and not enough room for a stroller in the trunk), so we traded her in and upgraded to the Kia Soul. The color is called Alien and we’ve named him Oscar. He’s a happy little vehicle with great gas mileage and a booming sound system that we LOVE. How did we live without satellite radio for so long? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Woz is already enjoying Woztober being in full swing. She is writing everyday and has what she thinks is “delayed nesting” at our house. Russ has been busy in the kitchen trying out new, yummy recipes and is looking into cooking classes. (We’ve been watching a lot of Hell’s Kitchen!) Life is GOOD.

Spring Into Summer – An Update

Wow, we really have no idea where the time goes. We wake up on a Saturday morning, blink and then it’s Monday morning all over again. Does this happen to anyone else? We can’t believe that summer is almost here!

In general, things are pretty quiet with the Flints. We’re just chugging along with work and still getting into a groove with Xion. And just when we’ve mastered his routine, he changes it up on us. Ah, life with an infant! We love it though and wouldn’t change one single thing. Well, if someone knows how to put more hours in the day, we request they do that ASAP, okay? Thanks in advance! ๐Ÿ˜€

No real theme today, just lots of random things for you!

Xion has outgrown the sink and is now in his big boy bathtub. He still freaks out for a few seconds when we put him in the water but he adjusts pretty fast and enjoys getting all sudsy. Who wouldn’t enjoy getting all sudsy?

Don't forget to get behind my ears, daddy!

The kitties are loving getting their outdoor time. We try to get them out at least once a week. As you can see, sunbathing is a favorite activity for this gang.

Oh hi.

Gosh, I can't even get any privacy out in the wilderness!

Are you the waitress? I require a snack!

We’ve been trying to get out for a walks on the weekends when it’s not blazing hot or so windy that Xion’s stroller could get blown into traffic! Yes, the New Mexican winds are crazy like that. Xion really has the best digs for our walks.

No, mommy and daddy, you cannot have a turn in here!

Cousin Mark came to town and we all gathered at Uncle Russ’ house for some brunch recently. Xion got to meet his older cousins, Ethan and Drew. Here he is with them and their mom, Jenn.

If their dads are any indication of how much trouble they'll get into together, we need to watch out for the teen years. ๐Ÿ˜‰

One of my most favorite pictures right now of X with Maxwell.

Cute overload.

Oh and some random notes:

We are super excited to say that besides our mortgage, we are officially debt free! Woz went to the bank on Tuesday and paid off her VW Beetle and says that it drives a little happier now. ๐Ÿ˜€ We are going to try to call into The Dave Ramsey Show next Friday since it’s his program we used to get out of debt. Hopefully we will get on air and ย be able to do the debt free scream. ย Freedom!

We are convinced Xion is a genius (we aren’t biased!) and are loving watching all the developments and changes in him. He’s really started to interact with us and recognize faces and sounds. His smile is absolutely adorable and we’ve even heard an actual adult laugh. It was pretty much the coolest thing we’ve ever heard in our lives. He controls his neck like a pro and isn’t crazy about tummy time, but he’s getting the hang of that, too. He’s starting to “talk ” a lot and recently noticed his feet. Oh, the concentration he gets on his face! His most favorite thing in the world is when his daddy sings a certain Pit Bull song to him. As soon as Russ starts to sing it, X smiles immediately and his little tongue starts wagging around. (We think he learned the tongue thing from Nana and Grandpa Flint’s doggies).

Lastly, as many of you know, Woz is a writer. She hasn’t done a ton of what she considers actual writing in a long time and has decided to really put some time and effort into it for the next year. Russ and Xion saw the perfect muse for her and picked it up a couple weeks ago after they noticed her eyeing it when they spent the afternoon in Nob Hill. She’s a gorgeous, pink Olympia typewriter that is fully restored but will stay retired and just look pretty on Woz’s writing desk.

Woz named her Louise.

So, if you happen to see Woz go ahead and ask how her writing is going. She needs a little encouragement. ๐Ÿ˜€

Alright, we’ll sign off for now but will leave you with that adorable smile we mentioned in the Xion update.

Now THAT is a smile!

Baby Flint Update

I’m in my 27th week and the Dot is healthy and strong. We visited a specialist on Thursday as they want to keep closer tabs on me to ensure my high blood pressure (darn that chemo years ago!) doesn’t misbehave now that the pregnancy is further along. I’m happy to report they said my blood pressure is “beautiful”!

Our son has a nice strong heartbeat:

Makes mom and dad smile every time we hear it.

We have to admit that hearing his heartbeat never gets old and we grin ear to ear every single time we hear it. It’s amazing there’s a little person in the making inside my tummy! We also got to see close up shots of his heart and saw it beating. Did I mention how amazing that is? ๐Ÿ˜€

Still on target for him to be a Pisces, the due date is March 9. What a month for birthdays March will be! Papo, Dave, Mom, Cousin Isabelle, and Cousin Mark all have birthdays that month. He’ll be in very good company! Our house is scheduled to be finished in about 9-10 weeks and the Dot is scheduled to be finished in less than 13 weeks. I have this vision in my head that we’ll be moving into our new place (Dave will be here to help us with that) and I’m going to go into labor while unpacking. ๐Ÿ˜› Oh please, oh please, oh PLEASE let us already be moved into the new house!

Here’s a nice fancy 3-D image of our little fella. He’s still one flexible little guy:

Who turned on the light? I'm sleeping!

Many of you have asked if we have registered anywhere. We finally finished and are registered at both Babies R Us and Target under Woz Flint. The whole process was fun (and a little overwhelming at times) because we were able to begin envisioning this little person in our lives playing with toys, giggling when his daddy tickles his tummy, and waking us up at 3 a.m. because he’s got no sense of time and the world will naturally revolve around him. ๐Ÿ˜€

I’ll leave you with one more because I never get tired of the foot shots. Oh those little toes!

I like to kick mommy!
